The death toll in a collapsed building, early Thursday, in Lagos has risen to six. Emergency rescue officials have revealed that seven people, including two children aged 2 and 4, have been rescued from the rubble.
The 3-storey building at Oloto Street, Ebute Meta, collapsed at about 2.35 a.m. trapping about 10 people.
Rescue efforts are still ongoing.
UPDATE: 10 Confirmed Dead, More Still Projected
Scores of trapped residents of the three-storey building that collapsed early this morning at the Ebute-Metta area of Lagos have continued crying out for help hours after the house caved in.
Ten corpses have been pulled out of the rubble so far.
It is estimated that almost a hundred people reside in the building. However, it is not yet clear how many were inside as at the time of the collapse.
As at the time of this report, the only rescue operation going on is by a vigilante group and residents of the area who have tried to attack the debris with bare hands and any equipment they can find.
Police officers from the nearby Denton Police Station have also assisted in the rescue work while officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) and Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) have just arrived the scene..
"This is sad," said Musbau Agbodimu, the head of the vigilante group in the area. "Just two days into the Ramadan fast and we are hearing such terrible news. The vigilante group went into action immediately we learnt about the collapsed building; with the assistance of residents and the area boys. The police are here now.
The LASAMBUS, LASEMA and other rescue workers from the government are here now. We need excavators. As I am standing, they have removed ten corpses. We need help here urgently as the crowd is trooping in to catch a glimpse of the collapsed building. More than 100 occupants, including children and women, live in the ill fated building and they are trapped crying for help. It is a terrible thing."
A resident of the area, who identified himself as Seyi, said the building collapsed about 2.10am.
"We heard the loud noise but nobody could do anything at that time due to the darkness," he said. "Some of the women were preparing the Ramadan food when the building caved in. But it was about 6.00am that people noticed and came out to help in the rescue operation."

A+ A A- ASUU/ASUP strike: Ignore ministers’ reports, dialogue with workers, TUC charges Jonathan •As Yabatech students, others protest
in a frank message to the President, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to ignore the reports of his ministers on the ongoing crises in the nations’ universities and polytechnics, declaring that the ministers will never tell him the truth about the situation in the education sector.
Rather, the congress advised the President to dialogue with the university and polytechnic teachers that are both on nationwide strikes. “We urge President Goodluck Jonathan not to rely solely on reports from people in his cabinet who might never tell him the truth about the situation at hand. From one side of their lips they tell us that Nigeria has a robust and strong economy, and from the other side they tell us that from October, 2013 the government may have problems paying workers’ salaries/allowances. Something is definitely wrong somewhere.
“If nothing is wrong, there is no reason why an agreement that was signed in 2009 with stakeholders in the tertiary institutions is yet to be honoured four years later. This is not only preposterous, but also has a devastating and fatal consequence on sanctity of contract,” the TUC said in a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its President, Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama and the Secretary-General, Comrade Musa Lawal.
The congress said it was particularly troubled taking into cognisance the abysmal performance of students in their examination and other academic endeavours, adding, “If the nation must enter the club of 20 leading countries in the world, we must begin to address these issues holistically.”
The statement said the congress was highly disturbed by the various strikes embarked upon by the ASUU and their counterparts in ASUP, saying that the strike had been brewing for four years, being a fall-out of the Federal Government’s non-implementation of some key clauses in a Memorandum of Understanding that it entered into with the lecturers in 2009.
It therefore called on the government to engage the workers, adding, “The TUC wishes to appeal to government to engage all the striking workers in a dialogue to resolve the issues at stake and give room for more conducive and optimally productive working environment.”
“The educational downslide and attendant problems must be stopped lest we find ourselves in an abyss. The government should take decisive action that will meet the legitimate needs and expectations of ASUU and ASUP. The time to do that is now!”
MEANWHILE, angry students from Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) and other higher institutions on Tuesday disrupted traffic along Ikorodu Road in Lagos State to protest against the continued closure of their school.
The students gathered under the umbrella of Nigeria Education Right Coalition against Commercialisation of Education in Nigeria.0
The students were protesting the indefinite strike, embarked upon by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), which has been on for months now.
The visibly angry students rebuffed efforts by men of the Nigeria Police to disperse them as they chanted war songs.
Some of the students laid down on the middle of ever-busy Ikorodu road, while others were busy distributing fliers to drivers who were driving at snail speed on the other side of the road.
One of the students, who simply identified himself as Bright, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune carpeted the Federal Government and the Minister of Education for what he described as “uncaring attitude”
When contacted , the image maker in charge of the state police command , Ngozi Braide said that she was not aware of any protest and promised to find out from the appropriate authority.

Pakistani president’s security chief killed in suspected suicide attack
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — One of Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari’s most trusted aides was killed in a suspected suicide bombing in the volatile port city of Karachi on Wednesday as he stopped his armored vehicle to buy some fruit, police said.
Pakistan has suffered a spate of attacks since Nawaz Sharif was sworn in as prime minister last month, underscoring the challenges facing the nuclear-armed nation in taming a Taliban-linked insurgency.
A senior police officer in the city said Bilal Shaikh — Zardari’s security chief, who was always spotted next to the president during public appearances — and two others were killed in a prosperous area of eastern Karachi.
“It seems that the suicide attacker walked up to Bilal Shaikh’s vehicle and blew himself up outside the front passenger seat of the vehicle where Shaikh was seated,” the officer, Raja Umar Khattab, said. About a dozen people were wounded. A police escort was accompanying Shaikh’s sport-utility vehicle at the time of the attack.
No one asserted responsibility for the blast, which took place on the eve of the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which begins in Pakistan on Thursday.
The latest wave of attacks has ended a period of relative calm after a May election that marked Pakistan’s first transition between elected civilian governments. In early June, Sharif won a parliamentary vote to become premier for the third time.
Last weekend, at least five people were killed when a bomb ripped through a busy restaurant street in the eastern city of Lahore, Sharif’s home city. On June 30, at least 28 people were killed in the southwestern city of Quetta when a suicide bomber struck in a largely Shiite neighborhood.
Shaikh, who had survived an assassination attempt near his home in Karachi about a year ago, used to change his routes several times while traveling around one of Pakistan’s most violent cities.
Like Zardari, he belonged to the Pakistan People’s Party, which had been in power before the May election. Taliban-linked militants had previously targeted the secular party.
Zardari and Sharif issued separate statements condemning the attack, a private TV channel reported.
It was the first attack in Karachi since mid-June. At least nine people were killed when a bomb targeting the convoy of a senior judge exploded in the old city area. The judge survived. The Pakistani Taliban asserted responsibility for that attack.

Singer Tunde Ednut Involved in Car Accident on His Way to Visit Sick OJB Jezreel
Fast-rising singer and comedian, Tunde Ednut was reportedly involved in a car accident on Sunday, June 30, 2013.
Reports claimed that the singer was on his way to visit music producer, OJB Jezreel – who is presently in need of about N16million for a kidney transplant – when the accident occurred.
Eye witnesses claim that a taxi rammed into the singer’s car, damaging a side of the vehicle.
Tunde was formerly a comedian based in the UK until he returned to Nigeria to pursue a music career.
